Fall Events in Paris, Texas: Fairs, Pumpkins, and Small-Town Season

September in Lamar County has a way of easing you into fall. The Red River Valley Fair

From a log cabin at 6260 Farm Road 197, the lights of the Red River Valley Fair are about 20 minutes down US 271 into Paris. This year the fair runs Wednesday, September 30 through Saturday, October 3 at the Paris-Lamar County Fairgrounds on Rita Haynes Boulevard. Four nights of livestock shows, a carnival midway, community and arts-and-crafts exhibits, a petting zoo, a pumpkin patch for the little ones, and more food vendors than you can try in one visit. It is the kind of fair where you wave at people you know in every aisle, and where the kids' favorite stop is still the livestock barn before the rides.

The Festival of Pumpkins

A few weeks later, on Saturday, October 24, downtown Paris hosts the 26th annual Festival of Pumpkins. Main Street fills with carved pumpkins, local vendors, food trucks, and live music, and the whole thing feels like a postcard of small-town Texas. Families come down from acreages all over the county, kids in boots and flannel, everyone loaded up on festival food before the drive home in the twilight.

The best part of small-town fall near Arthur City might be the drive home. After a day at the fair or the festival, you turn off the highway onto Farm Road 197, the porch light of the log cabin comes into view, and the quiet settles back in.
