Halloween in Northeast Texas: Trunk or Treat in Paris and Family Acreage Life

This is Halloween week on Northeast Texas acreage, and it is a good one for families. Evenings finally carry that October chill, pumpkins have lined porches across Lamar County for weeks, and costumes are being argued about at dinner. A place like 6260 Farm Road 197 is made for this season: a long gravel drive for the trick-or-treat parade, a wrap-around porch for the jack-o-lanterns, and open pasture for glow-stick games once it is dark.
Trunk or Treat in Paris: Friday, October 30
The City of Paris Trunk or Treat runs Friday, October 30, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Sports Complex Pavilion on South Collegiate Drive. City departments line up to hand out candy, the event is free, and it is wonderfully kid-sized, with short lines, bright lights, and parking right beside each trunk for little legs. Last Saturday the downtown plaza hosted the 26th Annual Festival of Pumpkins, with vendors, bounce houses, and the kids' costume contest, and Paris keeps the fall momentum going all month. For families who live on quiet roads, these events are a sweet reminder that our community reaches well past the front gate.
The Pumpkin Patch at Bywaters Park
Before the month ends, take the short drive south to the pumpkin patch at Bywaters Park on South Main Street, open daily through October 31 with pumpkins starting around a dollar. There is pumpkin decorating, photo spots, games, and a hay bale slide, all set in a pretty park. It makes an easy after-school outing, with hot chocolate on the way home through the farm country north of town.
A Bigger Outing: The Hugo Pumpkin Festival
If you want a full day of it, the 12th Annual Hugo Pumpkin Festival runs through November 1 in Hugo, Oklahoma, about thirty miles north. Beyond the hay rides, bounce houses, and super slide, the festival benefits the Endangered Ark Foundation, so kids can ride past the rescue elephants that call the grounds home. Being minutes from the Oklahoma border is one of the quiet perks of Arthur City living, and this is the kind of trip the whole family asks to repeat next year.
Why Halloween Is Better on Acreage
Honestly, the best part of Halloween at a home like this one is what happens on your own land. On 4.5 acres you can set the porch up as the pumpkin display, hang glow sticks along the fence line, and build up the fire ring for cocoa and marshmallows after the little ones tap out. In North Lamar ISD the kids head back to school Monday comparing candy hauls with the same friends they see at ball games and parades all year. That is country living: neighbors you know by name, and room at home for every tradition to grow a little bigger.
